The One Thing That Matters More Than Diet for Blood Sugar (And You Can Do It This Summer)

If you have Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, you've probably spent years obsessing about what you eat.


Counting carbs. Restricting sugar. Tracking every meal. Avoiding entire food groups.

And yes—food matters. What you eat absolutely affects your blood sugar.


But what if I told you there's something that matters more than diet for blood sugar regulation?


Something that, when addressed, makes food easier to manage. Makes blood sugar more stable. And makes the whole process feel less overwhelming.

The Missing Piece


Let me start with a pattern I saw constantly during my decade as an endocrinology nurse practitioner:


Someone would come in for their appointment. Their A1C was elevated. Their fasting glucose was high.


And they'd say: "I've been so careful with my diet. I'm eating low-carb. I'm avoiding sugar. I don't understand why my numbers aren't improving."


They were doing everything "right" with food. And they genuinely were—their food journals looked textbook perfect.


But their blood sugar was still dysregulated.


Why?


Because food is only one piece of the blood sugar puzzle.


And when the other pieces aren't addressed—when stress is chronically high, sleep is poor, movement is minimal—diet alone can't overcome the metabolic dysfunction.


The one thing that matters more than diet for blood sugar regulation?


Your nervous system.


Specifically: whether your body is in a chronic stress state (fight-or-flight) or in a rest-and-restore state where healing and regulation can actually happen.


Let me explain why this matters so much.


How Stress Raises Blood Sugar


When most people think about blood sugar, they think about food.


"I ate carbs, so my blood sugar went up."


But stress raises blood sugar too—independent of food.


Here's how it works:


When your brain perceives stress—whether it's work pressure, family conflict, financial worry, or even the stress of trying to be "perfect" with your diet—your body releases stress hormones:


  • Cortisol

  • Adrenaline

  • Glucagon


These hormones have one primary evolutionary job: raise blood glucose to give you energy to deal with a threat.


Cortisol signals your liver to release stored glucose (glycogen) into your bloodstream. It also triggers a process called gluconeogenesis—where your liver makes new glucose from protein and fat stores.


Blood sugar rises. Even if you haven't eaten anything.


In the short term, this response is helpful. If you actually need to run from danger or fight off a threat, you need that immediate burst of glucose for energy.


But when stress is chronic—when you're in fight-or-flight mode day after day, week after week—your liver is constantly overproducing glucose. Cortisol stays elevated. And insulin resistance worsens.


This is why people say: "I ate the same thing I always eat, but my blood sugar was way higher on a stressful day."


It's not the food. It's the stress.


And here's the thing: you can eat a perfect low-carb diet, but if chronic stress is running in the background, your blood sugar will stay dysregulated.


How Stress Damages Gut Health


But stress doesn't just spike blood sugar in the moment.


Chronic stress damages the system that regulates blood sugar long-term: your gut.


Here's what happens when you're under chronic stress:


Cortisol damages your gut lining.


Your gut lining is a single layer of cells held together by tight junction proteins. These proteins act as gatekeepers—deciding what gets absorbed into your bloodstream and what stays in your digestive tract.


But chronic cortisol exposure weakens those tight junctions. The gut lining becomes permeable—what's often called "leaky gut" in functional medicine.


When the gut lining is compromised, inflammatory particles, undigested food proteins, and bacterial toxins start leaking through into your bloodstream.


This triggers an immune response. Chronic systemic inflammation develops.


And that inflammation blocks insulin signaling.


Inflammation directly interferes with insulin receptors on your cells. Insulin is trying to deliver glucose into cells, but the inflammatory signals are blocking the message.


That's insulin resistance.


Stress changes your microbiome.


But stress does something else to your gut too: it fundamentally alters your microbiome composition.


Studies show that chronic stress:

  • Reduces beneficial bacteria (the strains that help regulate inflammation, produce insulin-sensitizing compounds, and support metabolic health)

  • Increases opportunistic, inflammatory bacteria

  • Disrupts the overall diversity of your gut ecosystem


And here's the particularly cruel part: those inflammatory gut bacteria produce compounds (lipopolysaccharides, metabolites) that signal back to your brain, creating more stress and anxiety.


So now you're stuck in a vicious loop:

Stress → damages gut → inflammation increases → insulin resistance worsens → blood sugar rises → more stress about blood sugar → more gut damage → cycle continues.


This is how chronic stress becomes Type 2 diabetes.


The Metabolic Inflammation Loop™


This stress-gut-blood sugar connection is a key part of what I call the Metabolic Inflammation Loop™.


Here's how the cycle works:

Step 1: Chronic stress triggers cortisol release.Cortisol raises blood sugar directly by signaling hepatic glucose production. It also suppresses insulin sensitivity throughout the body.


Step 2: Chronic cortisol damages the gut.The gut lining becomes permeable. The microbiome becomes imbalanced. Gut-derived inflammation increases.


Step 3: Gut-derived inflammation blocks insulin signaling.Your cells become resistant to insulin. Blood sugar stays elevated. Your pancreas compensates by producing more and more insulin (hyperinsulinemia).


Step 4: High blood sugar and high insulin create more inflammation.Elevated glucose is inflammatory. High insulin is inflammatory. Both worsen gut dysfunction and increase systemic inflammation further.


Step 5: The loop perpetuates itself.

More stress → more cortisol → worse gut health → more inflammation → deeper insulin resistance → higher blood sugar → more stress → cycle continues.


And here's what makes this so insidious:

You can eat a perfect diet, take your medication, exercise daily—and if chronic stress is running in the background, your blood sugar will stay dysregulated.


Because you're not just dealing with dietary glucose. You're dealing with:

  • Stress-induced glucose production from your liver

  • Cortisol-driven insulin resistance

  • Gut inflammation blocking your body's ability to regulate anything properly


This is why nervous system regulation isn't optional for Type 2 diabetes. It's foundational.


Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Address This


So why am I telling you this now—in summer?


Because summer gives you natural opportunities to regulate your nervous system in ways that other seasons don't.


Here's what I mean:


1. More sunlight and outdoor time.


Sunlight exposure—especially morning sunlight—regulates your circadian rhythm, which controls your cortisol patterns throughout the day.


When your circadian rhythm is healthy:

  • Cortisol rises in the morning (when you need energy and alertness)

  • Cortisol drops in the evening (when you need to wind down and sleep)

When it's disrupted:

  • Cortisol stays elevated all day and night

  • Sleep quality suffers

  • Insulin resistance worsens


Summer = more daylight hours, warmer weather, easier to get outside, more opportunity to reset your circadian rhythm naturally.


2. Vacation time and slower pace.


For many people, summer includes vacation time, long weekends, or a slightly slower work pace.


This creates an opportunity to practice:

  • Setting boundaries around work

  • Taking actual breaks

  • Giving your nervous system permission to shift out of chronic fight-or-flight mode


Even a few days of true rest can begin to lower chronically elevated cortisol.


3. Nature exposure.


Being in nature—walking in a park, sitting by water, hiking on trails, gardening—has been shown in multiple studies to lower cortisol more effectively than indoor activities.


One study found that just 20 minutes in nature significantly reduced stress hormone levels.


Summer makes nature more accessible and more inviting.


4. Connection and community.


Summer gatherings, family barbecues, outdoor meals with friends—these create opportunities for human connection.


And connection is one of the most powerful nervous system regulators.


Chronic isolation and loneliness increase cortisol and worsen metabolic health. Social connection, physical touch, and meaningful relationships activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest mode) and lower stress hormones.


Summer gives you natural access to the things that regulate your nervous system.


And when your nervous system is regulated, blood sugar becomes easier to manage—not through more restriction, but through restoration of the system itself.


What Nervous System Regulation Actually Looks Like


So what does nervous system regulation actually look like in practice?


It's not about eliminating all stress from your life. That's neither realistic nor necessary.


It's about actively shifting your body out of chronic fight-or-flight and into rest-and-restore mode on a regular basis.


Here are the most effective, evidence-based tools:


1. Morning sunlight exposure.


Get outside within an hour of waking up. 10-15 minutes is enough.


Let natural light hit your eyes (no sunglasses for this part—your retinas have photoreceptors that signal your circadian clock).


This simple practice:

  • Resets your circadian rhythm

  • Lowers daytime cortisol

  • Improves nighttime sleep quality

  • Supports insulin sensitivity


2. Diaphragmatic breathing.


5-10 minutes of slow, deep breathing activates your vagus nerve—the main nerve of your parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system.


Try this pattern:

  • Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 counts

  • Hold for 4 counts

  • Breathe out slowly through your mouth for 6 counts

  • Repeat for 5-10 minutes


This signals to your body: "We're safe. We can relax. There's no threat."


3. Post-meal walks.


Walking after meals doesn't just lower blood sugar by moving glucose into muscles.

It also lowers cortisol and shifts your nervous system into a calmer state.


A 15-20 minute walk after eating is one of the most powerful metabolic interventions you have—and it addresses both blood sugar regulation and nervous system regulation simultaneously.


4. Sleep optimization.


Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest stressors on your nervous system—and one of the biggest drivers of insulin resistance.


Even one night of poor sleep can increase insulin resistance by 25% the next day.


Prioritize:

  • Consistent sleep and wake times (even on weekends)

  • 7-9 hours of sleep per night

  • Cool, dark bedroom

  • No screens for 1 hour before bed


5. Time in nature.


Even 20 minutes in a park, by water, or on a trail:

  • Lowers cortisol

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Shifts the nervous system into parasympathetic mode


You don't need to hike for hours. Just being outside in a natural environment has measurable physiological benefits.


6. Connection and community.


Spend time with people you care about. Have meaningful conversations. Laugh together.

Physical touch—hugs, holding hands, sitting close—activates the parasympathetic nervous system and reduces stress hormones.


Connection isn't a luxury. It's a biological need that directly affects your metabolic health.


These Aren't "Nice to Haves"—They're Metabolic Interventions


Here's what I want you to understand:


Morning sunlight, breathing exercises, nature time, connection, sleep—these aren't "self-care" activities you do in addition to managing your blood sugar.


They are metabolic interventions that directly affect blood sugar regulation.


When your nervous system is regulated:

  • Cortisol drops and normalizes its rhythm

  • Gut lining begins to heal

  • Microbiome diversity improves

  • Systemic inflammation decreases

  • Insulin sensitivity improves

  • Blood sugar stabilizes naturally


And food becomes easier to manage—not because you're restricting more, but because the system that regulates blood sugar is functioning properly.


I've seen this pattern over and over with clients:


They come to me eating a perfect low-carb diet but still struggling with high blood sugar.


We don't change their diet much at first. We start with nervous system regulation:

  • Morning sunlight

  • Breathwork

  • Post-meal walks

  • Better sleep

  • Stress boundaries


Within weeks, their fasting glucose drops. Their post-meal spikes narrow. Their A1C improves.


Not because they suddenly ate fewer carbs. But because they finally addressed the stress that was driving the insulin resistance.


This Summer, Make Your Nervous System a Priority


If you've been focused only on food—counting every carb, restricting every meal—and your blood sugar still isn't where you want it to be, this is your answer.

When chronic stress is running in the background, no amount of dietary restriction will fix the underlying problem.

And summer gives you the perfect opportunity to prioritize this.


This summer:

  • Get outside in the morning (10-15 minutes of sunlight)

  • Practice deep breathing (5-10 minutes daily)

  • Walk after meals—especially in nature

  • Prioritize sleep (7-9 hours, consistent schedule)

  • Spend time with people you care about

  • Give yourself permission to rest


These aren't luxuries you can get to "someday when things calm down."


They're the foundation of metabolic health.
